On the 16th of March 2025, ‘Marie Balavenne’ Catholic College in Nigeria, celebrated her 8th Annual Cultural Day Festival.
The event started with the celebration of the Holy Mass at 10am. The mass was celebrated by Rev Fr Francis Koshofa, SJ, with Rev Fr Matthew Fasinu, Rev Fr Pius Ibeabuchi and Fr Nyakno Sam the school Chaplain. In his homily, Fr Koshofa imade reference to the New National Anthem of Nigeria, “Nigeria we hail thee”, explaining in details the words and their meanings. He encouraged everyone to keep maintaining the unity even in our diversity. He spoke passionately on the need for a peaceful co-existence among the various tribes and ethnic groups present in the Nation. “For us to achieve any meaningful development and progress as a Nation, we must all learn to live together and tolerate one another” he said. It’s pertinent to note that the theme of this year’s event “One People Great Nation” was to foster unity amongst diverse tribes.
Another set of people who identified themselves with different cultures were the Daughters of the Holy Spirit Sisters who dressed in different attires other than those of their tribes to signify their solidarity with every other tribe.
The event was undoubtedly a resounding success, showing the diversity and richness of cultures represented within the school community, From the Yoruba’s, to Igbo’s, Arewa’s, Edo/Delta, as well as Akwa/Cross. It was indeed a display of rich cultural heritage.
